Clandestine Darkness update

 Coming January 2024

I think I have the reading order sorted out. The book reading order is:

Dream Lover

White Wolf

Love and Consequences

Fade to Black

Of Wolf and Man

Promises to Keep

Malevolent Dead

Blood Moon

Forbidden Magic

I have several short stories also set in the same world, some even featuring cameos from our favorite characters, that I am looking to include as well. It will be fantastic having all of these stories in one place.

I have commissioned the same artist that did the cover for At All Costs to do the cover for Clandestine Darkness. I can't wait to share it with you!

Something old, something new

With the re-release of the Sarah Vargas Series, I am now looking at all of the stories and books set in her world. And there are lot of them. I think I am going to go the same route as Blood Moon and combine them all together into one work. Tentatively entitled Clandestine Darkness, this book will include Promises to Keep, Dream Lover, White Wolf, Love and Consequences, Forbidden Magic, and Of Wolf and Man. This is going to take a hot minute to put together, so I'm thinking it will be released around the new year.

Epiphany also takes place in Sarah's world, taking place before the events in Fade to Black, but it's already available from Decadent Publishing

At All Costs re-release!

My story, At All Costs, is now available for FREE at Smashwords!
https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1467446

I know this sounds cliché, but At All Costs was inspired by a dream where the world was under siege. It was like Transformers meets Terminator. I knew I had to write this down before I lost it forever. And this cover art!!!! I absolutely love it! I hope you enjoy!

Samantha is a technopath. In a post-apocalyptic world where all technology has declared war on humanity, she has the unparalleled ability to obliterate the tech-monsters, one threat at a time. But it comes with a costly price tag…

Werewolf bounty hunter Sarah Vargas has only one goal in life; to kill the Were that attacked and changed her. However a slew of werecreature murders send Sarah and her partner, Jared Fontaine, on the mission of their lives, ending with a discovery about Jared's past that might destroy them both.

Praise for the Sarah Vargas Series

“[Heather’s] writing gives Sarah an edgy, street-savvy persona. Sarah is the modern day heroine with smarts who does not need a dashing hero to come to her rescue. Sarah can look after herself and in a world where one walks a fine line between two existences, Sarah must draw on every ounce of humanity and ‘were-ity’ to avoid being overwhelmed by threatening forces.” – The Pen and Muse

(Rated 4.5 Stars) “What you get in this paranormal story is lots of action and excitement. You also get cruel and beat worthy enemy vampires...Oh and the weapons Sarah and Jared use were just COOL.” -Night Owl Romance

“I loved Fade to Black. It's one of the best short books that I've read.” - M. Corrales

(Rated 4 Teacups) “[Heather] was more than able to deliver with this short paranormal romance. From the first word, I was hooked and the end left me begging for more.” -Happily Ever After Reviews

(Rated 4 Siren Stones) “Fade to Black is an action packed story with little room for rest: both for her characters and her readers.” - Siren Book Reviews

“Fade to Black is a great story with strong characters that take the reader on a journey into a dark world. Heather tells the story with great attention to detail never leading the reader down a path that isn't fully explored.” - N. Arvizu

“Once again, [Heather] does not disappoint with this excellent tale filled with interesting characters caught in the midst of pedal-to-the-metal suspense and action in an intriguing supernatural world.” - Bitten By Books

“Sarah reaches out, grabs hold and drags you through the story with her. Non stop suspense...and enough paranormal nasties to keep you away from the cemetery permanently make this book one you've gotta read.” - You Gotta Read Reviews

(Rated 4.5 Teacups) “I would love to say more, but I can't without giving away some major plot points. Malevolent Dead is an awesome adventure with kick-butt action, hot sexual encounters, and interesting characters.” - Happily Ever After Reviews

Coming Soon...

Sarah is back!

The Sarah Vargas Series omnibus, entitled Blood Moon, is coming soon. Includes all three books (Fade to Black, Malevolent Dead, and Blood Moon) as well as a Sarah Vargas Short story entitled "The Unexpected Guests."

And the best part....it will be FREE!

Fade to Black:
Werewolf bounty hunter Sarah Vargas has only one goal in life; to kill the Were that attached and changed her. However, a slew of werecreature murders send Sarah and her partner, Jared Fontaine, on the mission of their lives, ending with a discovery about Jared's past that might destroy them both.

Malevolent Dead:
Werewolf Sarah Vargas thought all she had to worry about was the Blood Moon Corporation's retaliation. She never dreamed that another vampire would arrive, disputing Damian's claim over the throne of Charleston, SC. To make matters worse, he is no ordinary vamp; he's a vampire necromancer. He's exceptionally hard to kill, and Sarah will have to do whatever she can to keep those that she loves safe... Even if it means doing the unthinkable.

Blood Moon:
After she broke her contract with the Blood Moon Corporation, Sarah Vargas knew that it was only a matter of time before they came for her. What she didn't know is what lengths they would go to make sure that she had no where to run. Everyone Sarah has ever relied on is in danger during a time when friends become enemies, and Sarah quickly realizes that the Blood Moon Corporation will never give up until she is dead. The Blood Moon Corporation is coming, and even Sarah doesn't think she can make it out alive.

The Wicked Deed
Published by Every Day Fiction - December 2007

The fire roared around me, like some great apocalyptic monster. I kept my hand raised even though my nose had picked up the scent of charred flesh, and continued to use my magick to keep myself relatively safe. The dragon was no match for a witch on a mission and he knew it, perhaps as well as he knew me.

The dragon had guarded our village for the better part of a century. My twin sister and I used to spend our summers on his back, viewing our village from the heavens above. The fire around me stopped, gusts of wind and the sound of beating wings told me that the beast had taken to the air. I unsheathed my sword, waiting for him to make his move.

Normally, I wouldn’t have bothered such a creature in his lair, but I needed his blood to heal my twin sister. A sorcerer had cursed my twin and there were two ways to cure her. One was to find the sorcerer and force him to reverse it. The other was dragon’s blood fresh from the heart. I had to kill a dragon to get it. Sadly, time was running out and the only dragon I knew was Menian. The sorcerer that had done the deed was long gone, and Alianaha was going to be dead by morning if I didn’t find the cure. As I gazed up at the sky, watching the red scales of the dragon shimmering in the sunlight, I reminded myself that I was doing this for her.

Raising the Dead

Raising the Dead
Published in Bewildering Stories - 2008

It was never easy to raise the dead with magick and Kinandrea knew, now that the old magicks themselves were all but dead, it was almost impossible.

The human who had hunted Kinandrea, following her to the very edge of the earth, wanted her for just that reason. His wife had died four years ago, the result of a war between humans and mountain dwarves, and he knew that the only creatures who could bring her back were elves.

The magicks that were used in such a task hadn’t been seen for a century. The human didn’t seem to understand that, nor did he want to. He wanted his wife back and no one was going to stand in his way.

“Come out, elf!”

The human voice echoed over the stone, echoing louder than it actually was. She stayed still in the remains of a small worship hall that was little more than a hole in the ground, waiting for him to pass. He was a skilled hunter and she had gained several scars from his attempts to capture her. He was the predator, like some great serpent, and Kinandrea was a mouse trapped in a corner.

She held her breath, waiting for the human to pass. She didn’t know if human hearing could pick up what hers could. She could hear his soft, even breathing. She could hear his heart rapidly pumping blood throughout his body. He was nervous yet patient, a trait that most humans seemed to lack.

“I know you are near,” he whispered to himself. He poked at the rubble with the tip of his sword, moving aside small rocks and jabbing into open holes. He was trying to spook her into running. Kinandrea took a deep, quiet breath, and convinced her tense body not to do what he wanted. She could run, her long legs able to go farther than the bulky human’s, but her eyes had seen the crossbow on his back. If she ran, he would shoot.

Kinandrea had already gained the misfortune of being shot by one of those arrows and the ragged scar on her right hip was all she needed as a reminder. She knew that, given the opportunity, he wouldn’t miss again. All she had was the knowledge that he wasn’t shooting to kill.

The tip of the blade slid through the rocks and into her hiding place, coming just a hairsbreadth from her face. Kinandrea slapped a hand against her mouth, muffling a cry of surprise, but it was too late. She scrambled further back as the stones began to fall away and the human came into view. She froze as the tip of the sword pressed against her chest, piercing the skin and drawing blood. Kinandrea held back a cry of pain as blood slowly blossomed on her dress.

Where did all my books go?

 Unfortunately, things change.

The publishers I used to work with have closed their doors. And to be honest, after a blow to my creativity several years ago it's been hard to get back into the habit of writing like I used to. Recently, I have started writing poetry again. Usually short poems, but they have been allowing my mind to run down rabbit holes like it used to. Hopefully sometime soon I will have publishing news to share whoever may be left here. Time will tell.

So what is left out there?
